Tonight marked the annual Big Sub event at Barnard, during which an indescribably large sub appears on campus and is traditionally gone right after the eating commences. Barnard’s McAC, which organizes the event, was setting up lights and spreading fun little packets of what are apparently build-your-own-snowmen around the sandwich segments, which stretched from Sulzberger Tower and around Lehman Lawn before ending near the entrance to the Diana.

All-in-all, the sub totaled over 700 feet and was comprised of combinations of ham and cheese, tomato and cheese, kosher tuna, chicken salad, roasted veggies, turkey, and turkey and cheese.

Just as soon as it came, it was gone. Within mere minutes of the countdown, the vast majority of the sub was devoured by students eating with pieces in both hands, wrapping segments in aluminum foil, carrying plates and bowls and even filling tupperware containers with the sandwich. As of this posting, the only segments left were in a section called Halal Turkey, although Bwog can attest to the appearance of more tuna-like filling instead.

The cleanup was almost as impressive as the sub itself—within minutes after the eating began, Facilities staffers were already throwing away long stretches of tablecloth and folding up the many tables that lined the campus. As Bwog walked off campus at the end of the event, the lawn looked as if it hadn’t been occupied in the first place. Some people hung around to finish off whatever pieces they had left, but the vast majority of the crowd had long since dispersed.

Overall, Big Sub was again a huge success. If you couldn’t make it, there’s always next year…
