More outlets, plz!!!

ESC convened on Monday night to discuss building renovations, Prezbo’s Fireside Chat, upcoming events, and more. We sent Bureau Chief Aparajita Maitra to get the scoop.

ESC was up to its usual business Monday night.

In a meeting with Dean Boyce, ESC talked about a channel for alumni to donate straight to student groups that they care about. Carleton Lounge will be going through renovations and will be closed for a short time, the dates of which will be announced soon in the Mudd Renovations Timeline. More outlets are needed in places such as NoCo and Joe’s.

The post-renovated Carleton is looking to become Butler Café-esque without a kitchen, and it will stay open later. A microwave and a panini maker will be the highlights. Uris, however, will have a full kitchen. In opposition to closing the kitchen in Carleton, one member complained, “I have to take the elevator down from the 10th floor, walk to Uris, wait in line for a sandwich, and walk all the way back.” Also, Uris Café meals are a dollar more expensive.

At the Fireside Chat with President Bollinger, the expansion of the Core Curriculum was discussed. The proposition is that the Core Curriculum include more than just Western/European philosophy. Students believe that adding diversity and adding books with different authors is necessary. University Senate Jillian Ross noted that, “the Core is our foundation for this school, yet there are no people of color and only one woman represented.”

A focus on careerism at Columbia was also mentioned at the Fireside Chat. Some ESC board members say that students at Columbia worry too much about their careers and their futures, and these concerns are affecting their mental health.

ESC small project grants have been approved! Five teams have been awarded between $90 and $150 to work on their projects over the next two months. Here’s a preview of the different group projects:

• 8x8x8 LED Cube
• Eye in the Sky
• LOCKATED: a phone case with a GPS tag on it that locks to your phone
• Modular Furniture
• Smart Stroller: a temperature controlled stroller to keep babies warm

Look out for what these teams will create!

In the Student Library Advisory Meeting attended by Robert Adelson, plans for library changes and updates were discussed. The Reserves Desk now has 4 Mac chargers, 1 Dell charger, and 1 Toshiba charger for rent for up to 4 hours. Starting November 24th, Butler floors 5 & 6 will be open 24/7 until the end of finals. ESC is talking about fixing WTF Columbia issues such as slippery/loud stairs in NoCo and poor lighting in Butler.

• Senior Class Ring Sale – October 21st-23rd, 12pm – 6pm in the Columbia Book Store.

• Major Declaration Celebration – Friday, 10/24, 6-8pm, Lerner Party Space: Join for dinner from Malaysia Grill, talks with CCE, OGP, CSA, and upperclassmen, photo-taking, and more!

Class of 2018:

• First years have been approved for funding for an off-Campus Social on November 13th. Details coming soon.
