How Mexico celebrated the court decision, probably

The Mexican Supreme Court ruled yesterday that individuals have the right to grow and distribute marijuana for their own personal use. This ruling is a challenge to Mexico’s (and America’s) conservative drug policies, and opens the door to legalization of marijuana in Mexico. (NY Times)

Meanwhile, in Taiwan, President Ma Ying-jeou is preparing for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping this Saturday. These talks will be the first such meeting between Taiwan and China since 1949. President Ma Ying-jeou is hopeful that they will reduce hostilities. (Reuters)

In Houston, an equal rights ordinance was recently defeated. This defeat, of a law intended to protect transgender people from discrimination in bathrooms, is a setback for gay and trans activists, but they’re determined to keep fighting. (Washington Post)

A new hardware device and iOS app called “Circle with Disney” allows parents to monitor their children’s internet use and screen time. The program allows parents to filter web content and set “bedtimes” while also promoting “age-appropriate content” such as Disney movie clips. (TechCrunch)

Finally, yesterday, the cover of the upcoming Harry Potter prequel movie, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” was released! The movie stars Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, the fictional author of the “Fantastic Beasts” textbook used at Hogwarts. (CNN)
