What’s this guy doing? Oh, y’know, just lion around

Winter Storm Jonas left Columbia’s campus with enough snow to last the rest of the winter, increased danger factors to many a staircase, and the inability to sprint to class without fear of slipping. But it also left Columbia’s student body irrevocably divided into two groups: those who spent all of Saturday holed up in their rooms with half of International’s beer supply, and those who braved the cold wind to do their best impersonations of Han Solo on the ice planet Hoth or Tian Tian the panda at the National Zoo. This week’s field notes reflect the best of both groups.

Surviving:

  • Babysat my first white kid. She was 5 & got buck naked and told me she wanted to show me her vagina. I was very uncomfortable but got paid $30/hour for sitting.
  • Got shushed by a girl in a hot pink Homies beanie
  • Went to a Broadway Presbyterian church service in lieu of reflecting on my decisions last semester
  • Went to dinner with my friend and her grandpa in which her grandpa referred to Freud as, “Sigmund says…”
  • Gave a friend my disposable camera
  • Forgot all the lyrics to Azealia Banks’ 212
  • Drank two beers on Saturday night and woke up at 2PM on Sunday with the worst hangover of my life
  • Changed my laptop background to the Spice Girls (Salt, Pepper & Paprika from Blues Clues, not the British pop group)
  • Got drunk halal at 1 am on Friday, tripped on the snow on the way back to my dorm (tearing my tights), realized I had forgotten to get change back and so forced my friends to return to the cart–only to be informed that I had apparently forgotten to pay at all. Endured knowing looks and snickers from people on line as I shamefacedly paid up.
  • Related: Some kid really wanted my halal, so I let him have half–a stranger! Not sure what I was thinking.
  • Suffered from hiccups
  • My knee popped while I was taking my shoe off after the fire alarm last Friday, hurt like hell.
  • Stayed in all day Saturday. Bought & consumed at least $60 worth of food that day alone.
  • Almost threw up in the back of 1020
  • Cried a lot on the phone with my parents
  • Went to Dodge (the gym) for the first time and it was weird.
  • Watched the first episode of Buffy because snow makes me feel nostalgic.
  • Combed out my hair

Thriving:

  • Went to soul cycle at 6:30 am during the blizzard, just four hours after returning from 1020
  • Sprained a ligament in my leg from reacting too forcefully while watching a Spanish psychological thriller.
  • Wore my new Ferragamo boots for the first time ever… out into a blizzard
  • While walking around Columbia during the storm, my friend and I took shelter from the wind in the engineering building. It was the first time either of us had been in the engineering building.
  • Held the 1020 men’s bathroom door shut for a drunk sorority girl while she peed in the toilet and conversed with me about her hometown
  • My roommate broke her wrist so I’ve been hooking her bra and tying her shoes every day
  • Had tickets to see Spring Awakening on Saturday night. Had them refunded (because all Broadway shows were cancelled that day.) Went to the box office on Sunday. Stood in line for three hours. Got into the matinee off the cancellation line. And still made it back to campus for a 6pm meeting.
  • Played flip cup with a former CCSC pres and the current Bwog EIC (the former editorials editor of Spec lost the game for us!!!!)
  • Walked from the subway to 30 Rock in the Blizzard and have never experienced such extreme weather in my life. I thought I was in danger.
  • Walked to Times Square in Blizzard because why the fuck not.
  • People in midtown walking in the middle of the roads made New York look like a futuristic disaster movie.
  • Felt like an Ice Queen
  • Did almost none of my homework
  • And finally, texted, “someone buy me a drink!” to my friends in our group chat while blackout drunk at 1020… I was provided with a g+t shortly thereafter
