Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters (B.O.S.S.) is bridging Black History Month and Woman’s History Month this week with its 46th annual celebration of black womanhood. This year, the week’s theme is “Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History.” Events celebrate the stories of Barnard students and faculty, as well as guests such as bell hooks and Taliah Waajid.
Each day this week, B.O.S.S. is sponsoring a talk, panel, or workshop. You can find more information on the individual events here or on B.O.S.S.’s event Facebook page.
Monday: The Results Are In #BlackExcellence in Film Tabling, on the 2nd floor of the Diana Center, 12-2pm
This tabling event and bake sale celebrates the accomplishments of black artists and actors.
Tuesday: Who Inspires You?, in the Zora Neale Hurston Lounge (121 Reid), 9-10:30pm
Students are encouraged to share their personal stories of inspirational women.
Wednesday afternoon: Faculty Luncheon: Who Inspires You? Part II, in the Sulzberger Parlor (3rd floor Barnard Hall), 12-2pm
Similarly to Tuesday’s event, this event focuses on stories of inspirational women; but for this lunch, the stories come from Barnard faculty.
Wednesday evening: “Radical Love, According to bell hooks”, in the Malcolm X Lounge (Hartley Hall -Columbia University), 9-10:30pm
bell hooks, a radical feminist who addresses issues of oppression, racism, patriarchy, and class domination, will speak on the importance of love to feminism.
Thursday: Advocacy in Relationships, in Diana Center 302, 4-5pm
This workshop, co-sponsored by Barnard Student Life and Furman Counseling Center, examines advocacy as a component of healthy relationship building.
Friday: A Celebration of Black Women Making Strides in Their Fields, in the Sulzberger Parlor (3rd floor, Barnard Hall), 6:30-8:30pm
This event is co-sponsored by CU Black History Month Committee as well as the Black Alumni Council and Kappa Alpha, Gamma Phi Beta, and Delta Sigma Theta. It will consist of a panel of professional black women, a networking hour, and giveaways, and requires an RSVP.
