We’re looking forward to more space!

USenate doesn’t send updates too often, so we were surprised by their recent email detailing ongoing policy discussions. The initiatives mentioned were increasing space for students (for studying and clubs) as some schools begin to move uptown, a revamping of course evaluation protocol, and a mention of the movement to commemorate the Lenape peoples with a plaque on campus. Additionally, the email expressed support for the Lion Credit Union Initiative, calling it a “fantastic opportunity.” There wasn’t much in the way of specifics, probably because most of the discussions are in early stages yet, but we look forward to seeing how these proposed changes will be implemented, especially regarding the expansion of student space.

Dear Columbia College,

I hope that second semester is starting off well! My name is Sean Ryan, and I serve alongside Marc Heinrich and Ramis Wadood as University Senators for Columbia College. We are excited to provide updates on several University policy discussions.

Morningside Student Space Initiative
As the Manhattanville campus continues development and some schools on the Morningside campus begin to discuss moving uptown, we want to make sure that the student voice is represented in decisions about vacant space. We are developing a long-term proposal for that space that will include advocating for a functional student union space and additional student study spaces.

Course Evaluations
The Student Affairs Committee of the Senate (SAC) has also worked to make course evaluations open to students. Soon, students will be able to see the quantitative and qualitative responses to semesterly course evaluations through an online platform.

Lenape Plaque
SAC also expressed formal support for a plaque on campus commemorating the Lenape peoples, who originally inhabited the land upon which our campus was built. We look forward to working with campus partners to move the process forward.

Lion Credit Union Initiative (LCUI)
SAC released a statement in support of LCUI, whose efforts will lead to the establishment of a credit union on campus. This presents a fantastic opportunity for on-campus student financial services and financial leadership opportunities.

As always, Marc, Ramis, and I would greatly appreciate your feedback and ideas on how to continue to make Columbia a great place for students. Additionally, please like our Facebook page here to stay updated.
