CCSC Class of 2019 President Josh Schenk announced that Columbia Housing will install air conditioning units in the floor lounges of most undergraduate dorms this summer. Five undergraduate dorms already have air conditioning, and, according to CCSC Class of 2019 President Josh Schenk, installing units in other residence halls will “greatly improve the quality of life.”

Air Conditioning in Residence Halls

For the first month of the fall semester, Columbia students are quite familiar with intense and uncomfortable heat. For the past few months, I have been collaborating with Housing to address this issue, and Housing has agreed to install air conditioning in the floor lounges for most undergraduate housing this summer for next fall.

Currently, only five undergraduate residence halls (Broadway Hall, Carman Hall, East Campus, Furnald Hall, and Schapiro Hall) are air conditioned. Because of safety concerns, window-unit and portable air conditioners are not permitted in any residence hall. By installing air conditioning units into the floor lounges, students will have a nearby place to go to escape the heat without needing to move locations in an inconvenient way. Installing AC in the floor lounge also has the added benefit of encouraging socializing among residents in the dorms.

For the majority of students in Columbia College and the School of Engineering who do not live in a dorm with air conditioning, adding air conditioners in floor lounges will greatly improve the quality of life. There is great benefit to having a comfortable lounge area during the start of school and finals season.

I am appreciative of the willingness of Columbia Housing to address this and other issues raised by the student body over the past year. Additionally, I would like to thank the Vice President for Campus Services, Scott Wright, and Executive Director of Columbia Housing, Joyce Jackson, for ensuring that this change will occur for the coming school year.
