With course selection upon us, we bring you one of our favorite features—a list of classes you should take before you graduate (or die, which ever comes first.) Let us take the work out of figuring out your schedule next semester and just sign up for all of these classes for an academically lit semester. Also, feel free to leave your own suggestions in the comments below!

History: American Women in the 20th Century, Premilla Nadasen

“Such a lady boss, wonderful perspective of American history through the lens of women.”

Classics: Classical Myth, Helene Foley

“An actual Greek goddess.”

Psychology: Introduction to Psychology, Patricia Stokes

“Hard to get into her lecture with the lotto, but she’s a wonderful teacher who understands how people best learn and retain information.”

History: US 1940-1975, Mark Carnes

“Fantastic prof, a lecture that won’t require much attention to do fine in the course.”

Spanish: Intermediate Spanish I, Francisco Rosales-Varo

“Francisco is just so kind… One of the most encouraging and understanding profs which is especially nice for a language class.”

Political Science: Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, Paula Franzese

“I’m taking First Amendment Values with her this semester and I love her as a professor. She’s a law professor at Seton Hall and is a very generous, kind, and inspiring person. I’ve heard lots of good things about CVCL, but anyone would be lucky to learn anything from her.”

English: Fiction Writing, Hisham Matar

“Hisham Matar is a famous writer (check out his wikipedia page!) and only comes to CU during the fall semesters. This fall he’s teaching Fiction Writing at Barnard and wow is that a great class. He’s absolutely brilliant, yet he still cares so much about his students’ writing and wants them to succeed.”

Philosophy: Philosophy and Feminism, Christia Mercer

“There’s a ton of reading in this course, from Plato to Judith Butler and with tons of (easier) writers in between. It really introduced me to a lot of thought on gender and sexuality that’s super important to how I discuss and view gender and sexuality issues. Professor Mercer is just coming back from a hiatus, which is great, because it wasn’t available last year. Last year the class was so popular that it got moved from Hamilton to Havemeyer 209. Take it!!!”

Political Science: Introduction to American Politics, Michael Miller

“Great lecturer. He comes up with Twitter tournaments during the fall semester.”

English: Modernism, Margaret Vandenburg

“Vandenburg is a challenging professor, focusing heavily on theory in her lectures. However, she is a damn good teacher and really makes you think about the texts on a deeper level.”

English: Science Fiction Poetics, Michael Golston

“One of the best classes I’ll take at Columbia. About science fiction, but it’s art, film, history, philosophy, and so much more.”

Philosophy: Intro to Philosophy, Cheryl Mendelson

“ANYTHING with Cheryl Mendelson”

Chemistry: General Chemistry I, Jon Owen

History: History of the Modern Middle East, Rashid Khalidi

“Take this class so you don’t sound like an absolute idiot every time you talk about the Middle East. Khalidi is also really entertaining and charming.”
