Happening in the World: After Ukraine’s President, Petro Poroshenko assumed martial powers following a ‘maritime skirmish in the Kerch Strait’ in which Russian warships fired on Ukrainian navy vessels, he issued an order barring Russian men of military age from entering the country. On Friday, Poroshenko tweeted that this was done in order to prevent the infiltration of private armies, alluding to the 2014 take over of Crimea by unmarked Russian forces.
Happening in the US: Alaska was left quaking after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck a bit before 8:30 am on Friday. The epicenter was approximately 8 miles north of Anchorage, and caused major infrastructure damage, leading to Alaska governor, Bill Walker to declare a state of emergency. An access road to the Anchorage International Airport was damaged, and although all access routes to the airport were not as damaged, the Federal Aviation Administration has called for a ground stop. It is unclear when flights to Anchorage will resume.
Happening in NYC: On Wednesday, two lawmakers on City Council introduced a bill that would make cyber-flashing a crime. Cyber-flashing is when an unwanted nude image is sent to a complete stranger, usually over AirDrop, an Apple feature which allows users to anonymously send images to other Apple device which have AirDrop on. If passed, the bill would make cyber-flashing, technology-enabled sexual harassment, a crime, punishable by a $1000 fine and up to one year in jail.
Happening on Campus: From 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, members of the litigation team within the NY attorney general’s office who are suing the Census Bureau will discuss the effects the potential citizenship question on the 2020 census. The possibility of this question on the census could result in an undercount of immigrant and low-income communities. And, they will be delving into what an undercount could mean for funding services such as food stamps, affordable housing vouchers, Medicare, and more.
Documentary of the Week: This week’s pick is the Bleeding Edge, word of warning it is a medical documentary and is not for the faint of heart. The Bleeding Edge investigates the $400 billion industry that is the medical device industry. It follows patients who have been left with debilitating conditions due to misused or unsafe medical devices which should not have been approved. It’s a very thorough documentary and makes me wary of literal any medical device.
