Happening in the World: Police in Hong Kong shot a protester when firing a live round of warning shots, marking the first injury from a warning shot in the 17 weeks of protests. This happened on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, which some had speculated to be Beijing’s deadline for ending Hong Kong’s protests, but the Hong Kong government denies a deadline’s existence. Happening in the US: California just passed a law that will allow college athletes to accept compensation from endorsements, directly opposing NCAA regulations that are still in place everywhere else. The NCAA pushed back on the bill on the basis of equal treatment among schools of different sizes, while California governor claims it is only fair to the athletes that they should be getting paid proportionally for their hard work. Happening in NYC: While attempting to disarm a suspect, an NYPD officer was accidentally shot by his partners and mortally wounded in the process. This incident, the second fatal one in seven months, has prompted questions about how the department can improve it’s training so this does not happen again. (NYT)
Happening on Campus: Tomorrow, Columbia Global Centers is hosting a panel on “The (R)evolution of Arab Queer Cinema: Queer Representation in Film Pre- and Post-Arab Uprisings,” in which five LGBTQ filmmakers will discuss how the Arab LGBT community is shaped by Arab queer cinema.
