Classes are canceled—now what? If nothing else, there are still Bwoglines.
Happening in the world: A fire has led to the destruction of tens of thousands of voting machines in Venezuela, a country already facing numerous accusations of fraud in their most recent elections. No cause has yet been stated for the fire, and prosecutors are investigating its origin. Elections for the National Assembly are set to occur by the end of this year, and the destruction of so many machines set off worries that such an election—of the only government body not under the direct control of President Maduro—could have its integrity compromised. Happening in the US: In Oregon, the nonprofit Washed Ashore is taking plastic pollution collected from the coast and turning them into a series of animal sculptures ranging from polar bears to leatherback sea turtles. The goal, they say, is to raise awareness of the issue and unite people around the project of making art out of waste. The nonprofit is now focusing on creating an education center on how to mitigate plastic pollution. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: City Chipotle workers are demanding that the company comply with paid sick leave laws guaranteeing a minimum of five days paid leave per year. As Covid-19 spread continues, more workers are expressing concern that they will face punishment from their employers for staying home when sick, regardless of the current outbreak. There have been four walkouts since last Wednesday, while Chipotle heads insist their company is in full compliance with paid leave laws. (Gothamist)
Happening on campus: Class, along with most events, is canceled out of an abundance of caution.
How to start your week: Experiment with different songs you can sing in your head to get to the required 20 seconds of hand-washing! Current suggestion: the chorus of “Africa” by Toto.
