Happening in the World: A handwritten message from a German military officer was found in a field in northeastern France 110 years after it was sent. The message, which was left inside an aluminum container meant to be delivered by a carrier pigeon, included details about German military exercises. The artifact will be displayed in France’s Linge Memorial Museum (CNN).
Happening in the US: President-elect Joe Biden has created a panel of experts to advise him and help draft policies to fight the raging COVID-19 pandemic. The panel will include thirteen members, several of whom are public figures, including former Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy (NYT).
Happening in NYC: Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a plea to New Yorkers to follow COVID-19 guidelines as the citywide positivity rate continues to hover above 2%, a threshold that could result in a new wave of shutdowns and restrictions. In previous statements, de Blasio has said that a 2% positivity rate would cause the city to reassess indoor dining, and a 3% positivity rate would result in citywide public school closures (Gothamist).
