Am I French? No. Do I feel French because I just wrote coup d’état? Yes.
Happening in the World: The Sudanese military led a successful coup against the governing council of Sudan which consisted of several top civilian leaders and the country’s prime minister. Currently, the military is holding top politicians and the prime minister at an undisclosed location in Sudan. The governing council was supposed to lead a transition from authoritarian rule to democratic rule; but now, with the military in control, the fate of the country is unclear. Witnesses have reported there is no longer internet access and fights in and out of the country have been suspended (BBC).
Happening in the US: A new affidavit, released by the director of “Rust,” explained that Alec Baldwin was in a scene which required him to point a gun at the camera when he killed the cinematographer. Why the gun was “live,” and not checked beforehand is still unknown. Investigators are still determining if there was foul play involved in the incident (NYT).
Happening in NYC: Around a dozen members of the NYPD are expected to publicly testify today about the 2014 killing of Eric Garner. The public inquiry is expected to last three weeks and is a result of pressure from Garner’s mom and other public safety advocates. The mayor and police commissioner will not be testifying as originally requested (Gothamist).
