New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art, and now with so much of it online for free, there’s never been a better time to experience it first-hand. “Where Art Thou” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/theatrically-inclined.
Workshops and Interactive Events:
- The next installment in the Barnard Digital Humanities Center’s series on Speculative Technologies for Liberatory Worlds will be occurring in a hybrid format both on Zoom and in Milstein 103 on October 28 at 4 pm. This workshop will focus on writing visionary fiction with writer Walidah Imarisha.
- On October 28 at 5:30 pm, the Barnard Sloate Media Center will be hosting a digital sound recording workshop in Milstein 105 focusing on techniques used in podcasting, music production, and film production. Participants will learn the science behind microphones and use Adobe Audition to crreate a ‘soundscape”
Exhibits and Visual Art:
- The Sound Art MFA Program at the Columbia University School of the Arts has partmnered with the Gabe M. Wiener Music and Arts Library for an exhibit on “sound art through the investifation of the Library’s spatial possibilities and devotion to sonic histories.” The exhibit will be open on October 29 at 6 pm in the Libaray in 701 Dodge Hall.
- The video celebration of this year’s annual Morningside Lights event will premiere on October 16 at 7 pm. The theme this year is ‘Play On!’ and will feature work inspired by both Duke Ellington and William Shakespeare.
Art Discussions:
- On October 28 at 8 pm, the Columbia Undergraduate Creative Writing Program will be hosting a conversation with celebrated poet Ladan Osman as a kickoff to their virtual roundtable discussion Art + Life Series.
- Columbia Alum Mary Jo Band ’98, will be joining Writing Program Associate Professor Susan Bernofsky in a discussion about literary translation, specifically the translation of Dante’s work, on October 27 at 7:30 pm.
