Happening in the World: Cuba experiences an island-wide blackout following Hurricane Ian, with 11 million people left without power. Two people are reported dead from the hurricane. Hurricane Ian is projected to make landfall on Florida’s west coast later today. It’s strengthening to a category four hurricane, and catastrophic winds, flash flooding, and storm surges are expected. (BBC)
Happening in the US: A lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of Indiana on Tuesday, seeking to block President Biden’s plan to cancel student debt. The Pacific Legal Foundation (the conservative law firm backing the lawsuit) asserts the policy is illegal, as well as that it could inflict harm on borrowers who would be forced to pay taxes on the forgiven amount. They also argue the executive branch lacks the authority to create this policy and is usurping Congress’ power to make law. (WP)
Happening in NYC: A ban on people in New York’s correctional facilities receiving care packages in NY prisons was enacted in August. Families cannot bring packages during in person visits, packages by mail are now only accepted from an approved list of venders, and families are limited to two non-food packages each year. Activists and family members rallied in front of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Manhattan offices on Tuesday to share their frustrations. (Gothamist)
