Happening in the World: Despite Russia’s defeat in the Ukrainian town of Lyman, the devastation of war is still affecting its residents. A day after Putin’s annexation announcement, the 5,000 Russian troops deployed to Lyman were killed or captured. The residents of Lyman describe their wish for peace and return to normal life, but many suspect they are not out of the danger yet. (BBC)

Happening in the US: A new advisory group within the US Treasury will promote the Biden Administration’s goal of economic equality. The Treasury Advisory Committee on Racial Equity will have 25 members from academia, business, and advocacy groups. They will each provide their expertise on tax policy, the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act, and the modernization of the Internal Revenue Service. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: Mayor Adams announced Monday night that asylum seekers currently in tents at Orchard Beach in the Bronx will be moved to Randall’s Island. Despite the city’s previous plan to house the asylum seekers, the new location will prevent damage to the tents from the effects of Hurricane Ian and subsequent flooding. Adams has received criticism from housing and immigration advocates, who say that the city is not abiding by the right to shelter mandate. (Gothamist)
