Stuck in Morningside Heights this Thanksgiving? Bwog has you covered!

Thanksgiving is a lovely time in the semester when many of us can take time off, go home, and spend time with friends and family outside of the Columbia bubble. However, for those of us who live an expensive flight or two away, traveling home isn’t always feasible.

But never fear! Even if you live far from New York, or have extenuating circumstances that will be keeping you on campus over the break, there are plenty of ways you can have a fun, relaxing, and restorative week off without even having to travel!

You can…

Go to University-sponsored Thanksgiving events:

  • This year, Columbia University Life is hosting a Thanksgiving Lunch on November 24 for Columbia College and Columbia Engineering Undergraduate students. You can register online.
  • General Studies will also be having an event where GS students can have a Thanksgiving meal together on November 22.
  • University Life also generally has drop-in events throughout Thanksgiving week. Check USL’s Instagram page for more information closer to the break!

Go on fun little day trips off campus:

  • Use your free museum tickets to see all the museums you haven’t gone to yet.
  • Study/read/picnic on Little Island (the island park they built near Chelsea Pier).
  • Gallery hop downtown.
  • Go to the DUMBO Flea, Chelsea Market, or any cool place that might be slightly less crowded because people are away.
  • GO TO MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE!
  • Go to the Bryant Park winter village!
  • Go to the Met on Wednesday or Friday! It’s closed on Thanksgiving but a nice indoor way to kill an afternoon by yourself when everyone else is gone.
  • Walk around in Central Park and see all the fall leaves.

Just stay here and chill:

  • Get Oren’s apple cider and enjoy the quiet on campus.
  • Find the most obscure spot to study on campus aka get lost in Butler.
  • Spend the entire break in University Hardware and Housewares. That place is like the casino in Percy Jackson I swear.
  • Have a movie marathon in the dorm! Is there anything you’ve been waiting to see once you’re not so busy with school? Now is the time!
  • Cook or bake something lovely.
