Happening in the World: A research team from China has published a new analysis of samples taken more than three years ago from the Hunan seafood market, which has been a center point in the search for the starting point of the COVID-19 outbreak. The research team’s paper showed that some samples – collected from areas where wildlife was being sold – had tested positive for the virus. Professor David Robinson from the University of Glasgow told BBC News that the contents of the samples were “compelling evidence that animals there were probably infected with the virus.” (BBC

Happening in the US: The Tennessee House voted on Thursday to expel two Democrats, Representative Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson, in an act of protest that marks the third time a lawmaker has been expelled from the Tennessee House since the Civil War. An effort to expel Democratic Representative Gloria Johnson, who stood with them, fell short by one vote. The expulsion occurred after they led a group of protestors calling for stricter gun laws into the chamber during debate. “This is not about expelling us as individuals. This is your attempt to expel the voices of the people from the people’s house. It will not be successful,” Jones said before the vote. “Your overreaction, your flexing of false power has awakened a generation of people who will let you know that your time is up.” (CBS

Happening in NYC: On Thursday, the street safety advocacy group Transportation Alternatives met with state lawmakers in Albany, urging them to allow independent speed limits in New York City. Currently, speed limits in the city are controlled by a state law mandating most roads be set above 25 miles-per-hour. However, the group insists that these limits are irresponsible and dangerous in a densely populated, high-pedestrian city like New York. Their demands are given greater urgency and gravity following the deaths of four pedestrians and cyclists on Wednesday–tragedies that, advocates insist, could’ve been prevented with stricter speed limits.
