Applications are due Friday, September 22 at 11:59 pm!

To apply for any position, please answer the questions below and send your completed application to editors@bwog.com by 11:59 pm ET on Friday, September 22.

Please send the application as a PDF entitled “[Name] Fall 2023 App.” There are no length or format requirements for the application—we are most interested in learning about you, so be as long-winded, short-winded, and creative as you’d like. There is also an optional role at the end of this application for Bureau Chief. If you are applying as a Staff Writer and are interested in this position, please include it after your Staff Writer application answers. There are only four Bureau Chiefs, so you may be accepted as a Staff Writer but not as a Bureau Chief.

You are welcome to apply for multiple positions but will only get an offer for one. If you apply for multiple positions, submit a single PDF file with all the questions for both applications and indicate which role you’d prefer.

Our new Fall 2023 Staffers will be announced in advance of our meeting on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

Staff Writer & Daily Editor

About Bwog:

  • What do you think Bwog is?
  • Tell us about one Bwog post you liked, one post you didn’t like, and why for both.
  • Come up with three sample post ideas that you would like to see on Bwog.
  • Represent Bwog visually (A Drawing, A Scribble, A Meme, etc.) [we especially welcome bad ones!]

About you:

  • Classic get-to-know-you: name, pronouns, (intended) major, school, graduation year, anything else you want to include!
  • Why do you want to join Bwog?
  • You’re taking Bwog out on a date! What would you do? Where would you go? There are no limits!

Questions for Staff Writers:

  • What aspects of Columbia might you be interested in writing about? How might you want to expand the type of content (articles, videos, audio, etc.) that Bwog produces?
  • In which building on or near campus would you most like to spend twelve hours?
  • In 50 words or less, tell us about your move-in!

Questions for Daily Editors:

Daily Editors:

  • Give us a screenshot of the open tabs on your browser.
  • How do you manage your time and keep yourself organized?
  • Are you able to dedicate one day per week to Bwog?
  • What three days work best for you to Daily?

Questions commitment/other student news organizations:

  • It is Bwog policy that you cannot simultaneously be a member of Bwog and another student news organization on campus (such as Columbia Daily Spectator, The Blue & White, or The Federalist). You are allowed, however, to write for campus literary magazines and other, non-journalistic organizations. Do you understand that if you are accepted to Bwog and to another publication, you will be expected to only commit to one organization?
  • For Dailies: Because the commitment required for Dailying is greater than that of being a Staff Writer, if you are accepted as a Daily Editor, it is our expectation that you will Daily for the entirety of the upcoming semester. If you are also applying to other places of student journalism, and are not sure which is your preference, please indicate that here. Do you understand this expectation of commitment?

Optional: Bureau Chief

Bwog is known for its regular coverage of the undergraduate student council meetings. We welcome first semester staffers to apply for a Bureau Chief application if they’re interested in connecting with the student councils and to break news about some of the major changes happening on campus. You do not need to be a student of the school to be Bwog’s Bureau Chef for it.

If you’re interested, the schedule for student council meetings can be found below:

Student Council Meeting Times
CCSC meets at 8 pm on Sundays in the Lerner Satow Room
SGA meets at 8 pm on Mondays in the Diana Center
ESC meets at 9:30 pm on Mondays in the Lerner Satow Room
GSSC meets Tuesdays at 8:15 pm in the Lerner Satow Room or on Zoom

Questions for Bureau Chief:

  1. What do you like about previous coverage? How would you improve upon this work and what would you do differently?
  2. Do you have a preference for which student government association (SGA, CCSC, GSSC, or ESC) that you would like to cover? Why?
    • We look to publish student government coverage quickly after the meeting occurs. Talk about your time availability with this role.
  3. Student government coverage can be tedious/repetitive at times. Name at least two ideas you have for keeping it interesting and relevant, both for yourself and our readers.

Illustrators

About Bwog:

  • What do you think Bwog is?
  • Tell us about a header image you like and didn’t like, and why for both.
  • Represent Bwog visually (A Drawing, A Scribble, A Meme, etc.) [we especially welcome bad ones!]
  • How do you think Bwog could improve its visual aspects?

About You:

  • Why do you want to join Bwog?
  • What mediums do you use?
  • Provide up to three examples of your past work.
  • Choose a building or statue on campus. Give a rough sketch or idea of how you’d capture it. No need to be polished, we just want to see how you think creatively.

Questions on commitment/other student news organizations:

  • It is Bwog policy that you cannot simultaneously be a member of Bwog and another student news organization on campus (such as Columbia Daily Spectator, The Blue & White, or The Federalist). You are allowed, however, to illustrate for campus literary magazines and other, non-journalistic organizations. Do you understand that if you are accepted to Bwog and to another publication, you will be expected to only commit to one organization?

Tech Team

About Technical Skills:

  • What is your web dev experience and which languages are you familiar with? Have you taken classes? Worked on a personal project? Link anything you feel is relevant.
  • Have you ever worked on a web team for an organization before? If so, link the website and briefly describe your contribution.
  • What is your favorite news website in general? Which specific features do you like?

About Bwog:

  • What do you think Bwog is?
  • What is something you like about the Bwog website?
  • What is one idea you have to make it better?
  • Would you be able to commit an average of two hours a week to Bwog website work?

Questions commitment/other student news organizations:

  • It is Bwog policy that you cannot simultaneously be a member of Bwog and another student news organization on campus (such as Columbia Daily Spectator, The Blue & White, or The Federalist). You are allowed, however, to work tech for campus literary magazines and other, non-journalistic organizations. Do you understand that if you are accepted to Bwog and to another publication, you will be expected to only commit to one organization?
