The first removal of a House Speaker in US history, the first public beach in Manhattan, and the inauguration of President Shafik!
Happening in the World: The Victoria Gippsland and New South Wales regions of Australia are now being hit with flood warnings after a week of bushfires. The fires have destroyed several homes and burned through 25 thousand square kilometers of land. A cold front is brining heavy rainfall to the region today, offering some relief, but also prompting a flash flood warning from authorities. Many have ascribed the quick succession of devastating natural disasters to climate change, and the UN has warned that without urgent action, the effects of climate change in the region will likely worsen. Happening in the US: Kevin McCarthy became the first House Speaker in history to be removed from office yesterday after less than nine months in the role. The House of Representatives passed a resolution to vacate the position with the support of eight Republicans and all present Democrats. Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry, who was named temporary speaker, has declared the House in recess. (AP)
Happening in NYC: Manhattan’s first public beach opened on Monday as the largest park built in the city since Central Park. Gansevoort Peninsula, located in Hudson River Park, is home to the beach, a sports field, a beachfront landing, and 20 million oysters. The project took four years to complete from design to construction. (The Gothamist)
