Happening in the World: According to the journal “Science of the Total Environment”, hermit crabs around the world are using plastic waste as shells. Two-thirds of hermit crab species have been observed using waste—such as bottle caps or light bulbs—instead of the usual snail shell. It is not yet clear if the materials are harmful to the species. Happening in the US: Staffers at The New York Daily News and Forbes went on strike yesterday, marking the first strike at a business magazine in over a century and the first at the Daily News in three decades. Staffers and their supporters picketed outside a co-working space. The Daily News union stated that they are protesting cost-cutting measures by Alden Global Capital, a firm which purchased the paper in 2021. Journalists at Forbes stated that their walkout is related to stalled contract negotiations among other issues. (AP)
Happening in NYC: Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine has called attention to what he calls an “epidemic of scaffolding” in the borough. In a report, he highlighted 10 aging scaffolding structures, seven of which have been around for over six years. The longest-standing, which stand in front of the city medical examiner’s office in Kips Bay, is more than 14 years old. Levine is working with Mayor Eric Adams to introduce a legislation reforms that would make the process of removing scaffolding more efficient. (Gothamist)
Happening in Our Community: The East Central European Center and the Njegoš Endowment for Serbian Language and Culture is hosting a screening of RAMPART and a Q&A with the director Marko Grba Singh.
