Happy applying!
Staff Writers write general posts for Bwog! We welcome all kinds of writers, and no previous writing experience is necessary. All members of the undergraduate Columbia community are welcome to apply. Writers are expected to write at least seven posts per semester. Feel free to explore some of our post types by clicking the left-side menu on our site!
About Bwog:
- What do you think Bwog is?
- Tell us about one Bwog post you liked, one post you didn’t like, and why for both.
- Come up with three sample post ideas that you would like to see on Bwog.
- Represent Bwog visually (A Drawing, A Scribble, A Meme, etc.) [we especially welcome bad ones!]
About you:
- Classic get-to-know-you: name, pronouns, (intended) major, school, graduation year, anything else you want to include!
- Why do you want to join Bwog?
- You’re taking Bwog out on a date! What would you do? Where would you go? There are no limits!
Questions for Staff Writers:
- What aspects of Columbia might you be interested in writing about? How might you want to expand the type of content (articles, videos, audio, etc.) that Bwog produces?
- In which building on or near campus would you most like to spend twelve hours?
- In 50 words or less, tell us about your move-in!
- Staff writers are expected to write 7 “posts” per semester (This could be a podcast, illustration, etc.). Is this manageable for your schedule?
Daily Editors are responsible for copy-editing and publishing all posts for Bwog. They work one day per week, and there is no post count requirement for this role. This semester, we need six Daily Editors. Apply for the chance to join a community of Dailies and work with our magnificent Deputy Editors, Renee and Nikki!

Daily Editors:

- How do you manage your time and keep yourself organized?
- Are you able to dedicate one day per week to Bwog?
- What three days work best for you to Daily?
Questions on commitment/other student news organizations:
- It is Bwog policy that you cannot simultaneously be a member of Bwog and another student news organization on campus (such as Columbia Daily Spectator, The Blue & White, or The Federalist). You are allowed, however, to write for campus literary magazines and other, non-journalistic organizations. Do you understand that if you are accepted to Bwog and to another publication, you will be expected to only commit to one organization?
- For Dailies: Because the commitment required for Dailying is greater than that of being a Staff Writer, if you are accepted as a Daily Editor, it is our expectation that you will Daily for the entirety of the upcoming semester. If you are also applying to other places of student journalism, and are not sure which is your preference, please indicate that here. Do you understand this expectation of commitment?
Bwog’s illustrators are creative and have a passion for visual art. Illustrators work with our Visual Editor, Eli, and draw images for our site by request or voluntarily. Join this amazing team!
About Bwog:
- What do you think Bwog is?
- Tell us about one header image you love and one you don’t love. Please explain why for both.
- What do you think the role of Bwog visual is? How do you think Bwog could improve in our visual presentation?
About You:
- Why do you want to join Bwog?
- What mediums do you use?
- Are you comfortable with the process of digitizing your work?
- Provide up to three examples of your past work.
- Choose a building or statue on campus. Give a rough sketch or idea of how you’d capture it. Nothing polished, we just want to see how you think creatively.
