New laws implemented are impacting professors and pizzerias. Editor’s Warning: Death and Violence.
Happening in the World: Ukraine has hit two landing ships used by Russia’s Black Sea fleet near Crimea. The Yamal and Azov ships were destroyed according to the Ukrainian general staff, however BBC has not been able to verify the claim. The Black Sea fleet is viewed as the best of Russia’s navy and has been repeatedly hit by Ukrainian forces, as they have begun hitting targets in Crimea more frequently. On Friday, prior to the announcement of the attack, Russia fired dozens of missiles at Ukraine that resulted in the destruction of an energy infrastructure, leaving a million Ukrainians without power and five civilians dead. Happening in the US: New Indiana law will require professors in public universities to promote intellectual diversity or face disciplinary action. The law is applied to all professors, regardless of tenure status, who will be monitored by the university’s board of trustees to ensure they are obliging. The State Senator who sponsored the bill, Spencer Deery, stated that this new push for free expression includes the inclusion of more conservative viewpoints on campus. Hundreds, including faculty senates at several institutions, have argued and fought against the bill as it is viewed as government overreach and policing towards academic free speech. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: Next month, a new regulation will go into effect that aims to limit emissions from New York City’s coal and wood-fired stoves. This rule will require restaurants, majority of them being pizzerias, with wood and coal stoves to add a filter system that will reduce emissions by 75%. The reason for this rule derives from the environmental issues that burning wood and coal creates as coal produces almost double the carbon emissions of natural gas and wood produces two-and-a-half times more. To take a weight off the burden this imposes onto pizzerias, Councilmember Justin Brannan has proposed a legislation that would provide restaurateurs with a tax credit for installing the filters. And, though the law is planned to go into effect April 27, fines for noncompliance from the Department of Environmental Protection won’t be issued until 2025. (Gothamist)
