Happening in the World: On Thursday, February 29th, a New Zealand court ordered the tour company, Whakaari Management, to pay NZ$ 4.75m in damages to victims of the White Island volcano disaster. While visitors were on a tour of the volcano, it erupted and killed 22 people. The three other tour groups involved were Volcanic Air Safaris, Aerius Limited and Kahu NZ Limited and they were also ordered to pay for damages. (BBC)
Happening in the US: In Los Angeles a private plane with Grammy winner Karol G on board made an emergency landing at Van Nuys Airport on the evening of February 29th. The plane left Hollywood Burbank Airport and headed east. When the pilot reported smelling smoke in the cockpit, the aircraft made the emergency landing. No injuries have been reported. (NBC)
Happening in NYC: In Harlem, two people were injured in a fire at a deli on the morning of March 1st. The fire was on the first and second floors of the building. There was one firefighter injured and one civilian injured. The status of the two victims is not known and the cause of the fire is still not known. (NBC)
Happening in Our Community: On Saturday March 2nd, bassist, composer and band leader, Linda May Han Oh, will be performing at the Miller Theatre. She will be performing in “The Glass Hours,” a collection of musical works. The event is open to all students and tickets can be found here.
