Happening in the World: Colombian luxury handbag designer Nancy Gonzalez has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for wildlife smuggling. She broke the law by importing bags made from caimans and pythons, protected reptiles under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Gonzalez’s bags have been worn by Britney Spears, Victoria Beckham, Salma Hayek, and other celebrities. (BBC)

Happening in the US: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Starbucks’ case against the National Labor Relations Board today. After Starbucks fired seven workers who were trying to unionize, a government agency obtained a court order to force Starbucks to rehire them, and Starbucks sought to curb this governmental ability. Starbucks has a contentious history with organized labor, with Workers United still attempting to reach a contract agreement with the corporation. In 2021, 420 Starbucks stores in the US voted to unionize, but none have reached a labor agreement. (Associated Press)

Happening in NYC: A law department employee admitted to stealing $600,000 in checks. Brandon Santanoo, who works in the mailroom, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Santanoo took checks and then passed them onto others, who tried to deposit them. He stole around 40 checks, including some that were for worker’s compensation. (Gothamist)
