Happening in the World: A rare mole has been photographed in the Australian outback. The northern marsupial mole, or kakarratul, is typically only seen a few times a decade. It is unknown how many of this animal there are. With golden fur, no eyes, and large hands, the mole is extremely uncommon, just one of many strange desert creatures. (BBC)
Happening in the US: UConn defeated Purdue in the March Madness tournament, 75-60, becoming the first back-to-back champions since 2007. The Huskies’ Tristen Newton scored 20 points, but it was their defense that secured the win, limiting the number of three-point shots Purdue could make. Purdue’s 7’4” Zach Edey scored 37 points, while the other Boilermakers collectively only scored 23 points in comparison. (Associated Press)
Happening in NYC: A new bill proposed by a New York City lawmaker would make tipping easier on food delivery apps. Delivery workers have said that these apps make it harder to tip, with apps like DoorDash and UberEats moving the tipping option to after the food has been delivered, and GrubHub lowering the suggested amount to tip. This law would require a tipping option at checkout, with the minimum gratuity being 10% of the total. Some delivery workers have engaged in collective organizing, under the name “Los Deliveristas Unidos,” and have earned better pay and working conditions since 2021. Their employment status is precarious because they are treated as independent contractors, without benefits like health insurance, while also being unable to set their own pay rates. (Gothamist)
