Happening in the World: The 189th Oktoberfest officially began in Germany today. This annual two-week fall festival is held in Munich and celebrates beer, food, and Bavarian culture. This year, the festival includes additional security features, including metal detectors, after an August 23 deadly knife attack in Germany (AP).
Happening in the US: In a push to revive physical movie-going, the National Association of Theatre Owners announced a $2.2 billion plan to renovate nearly 70% of movie theaters across the United States and Canada. The association represents major companies, including AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, and Cinemark. The renovation will include everything from projection technology to better air conditioning to adding other attractions, like bowling (CNN).
Happening in NYC: The NYPD has released body camera footage of a shooting that took place last Sunday on an L train subway platform. The confrontation, which began with a fare evasion and wounded four people, including one police officer and two bystanders, drew wide criticism about the NYPD’s use of force (AP).
Happening in Our Community: The 13th annual Morningside Lights festival, featuring community-built lanterns, will take place tonight. The festival begins at 8 pm in Morningside Park and processes to Columbia’s Morningside campus. This year’s theme is In Retrospect: 100 Years of New York Art.
