Welcome to Day Two of classes! We hope your trek to your 8:40 isn’t as busy as the streets of pre-pandemic Midtown.
Editor’s warning: Mentions of death and violence.
Happening in the World: Early on Wednesday, Russia attacked a number of cities in Ukraine, killing at least seven people and injuring several others in the western city of Lviv. The Lviv attack comes a day after a missile attack on the eastern city of Poltava killed dozens of people. Authorities urged residents to hide in shelters while schools, residential buildings, and medical facilities were damaged. (NYT)
Happening in the US: On Tuesday, the US Justice Department charged six Hamas members, including Yahya Sinwar, the group’s leader, in connection with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Charges include the murder of US citizens, use of weapons of mass destruction, and conspiring to finance terrorism. The criminal complaint also references decades of attacks by Hamas, while at least three of the individuals named in the indictment are now dead. (BBC)
Happening in NYC: Foot traffic levels in Midtown are almost back up to their pre-pandemic rate, a new study has found. In July, foot traffic in front of Manhattan office buildings in Manhattan reached its highest level in four years. While remote work remains more common than it was in 2019, experts are suggesting that increased commuting into the city will benefit retail businesses that have historically relied on commuters in New York’s business districts. Happening in Our community: Today from 10 to 11:30 am, University Life is hosting a “Maps & Snacks” pop-up table in Kent Hall where students can grab a campus map and a bite to eat in between campus.
