Happening in the World: Typhoon Yagi, Asia’s most powerful of this year, has significantly damaged factories and infrastructure in industrial hubs in northern Vietnam and its capital, Hanoi. The flooding from Yagi and the consequent landslides have killed 21 people and injured 229. Vietnam’s meteorological agency has downgraded the storm to a tropical depression, but there is a continuing risk of ongoing flooding and landslides. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: Boeing and the Machinists union, representing 33,000 Boeing employees on the west coast, have reached a tentative deal that could avoid a strike planned to begin on Friday. While it still has to be approved by the members of the union, the agreement would provide raises totaling 25% over the four-year life of the contract, bigger contributions to 401(k) plans, reduced employee contributions for health insurance, and increased time off as well as increased job security due to a promise of building the next new airplane in a union-supported plant. Happening in NYC: At about 2 pm EST today, the US Open’s men’s final between number 1-ranked Jannik Slammer and 12th-seeded Taylor Fritz will commence. Slammer is currently 34-2 on hard courts this year, and he has won four titles. Fritz is the first man from the United States to play for a Grand Slam title since 2009, and Andy Roddick’s 2003 victory at US Open is the last Slam title for an American man. (NBC)
Happening in Our Community: Tomorrow, Monday, September 9, a panel consisting of Journalism Professor Juan Manuel Benítez will be joined by Zachary Richner, founder of the Empire State Local News Coalition; New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez; Elinor Tatum, publisher of the Amsterdam News; Marjorie Velázquez, vice president of Policy at Tech: NYC; and Mark Hansen, director of the Brown Institute for Media and Innovation at Columbia University, will discuss the future of local news in New York, especially in regards to AI. The panel discussion will take place in the lecture hall on the third floor of Pulitzer Hall from 6 to 8 pm.
