Staff Writer Unaisah Ahmed visited Qahwah House. Here is everything you need to know!

Located between 111th and 112th Street on Broadway, Qahwah House is a short walk from campus and has quickly become busy with students as the new school year starts. Last spring semester, there was a lot of anticipation about the opening as the location underwent renovations.

The growing Yemeni coffee chain’s first location opened in Dearborn, Michigan in 2017. As a Michigander myself, I am SO excited to have a comforting piece of home nearby. I made sure to visit with friends as soon as I settled in from move-in chaos, craving a bit of familiarity. The coffee shop is particularly popular among the younger Muslim community, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment, especially with its extended hours during Ramadan.

As you step in, you’ll notice a large wooden map carved out on a wall, depicting the spread of coffee starting from Yemen and spreading across the world. You’ll be greeted by a warm atmosphere and friendly staff, happy to answer questions, provide suggestions for must-try drinks, and maybe share a playful joke while you debate what to order.

Qahwah House’s menu caters to both coffee and tea lovers, featuring premium organic roasts with unique Yemeni flavor blends and iced fruit refreshers. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick drink or something more filling, there’s plenty to choose from. The portions are perfect for sharing with friends, and you can choose to get drinks individually in cups or served in a larger pot with mugs for dining in.

The extensive dessert selection includes yummy saffron tres leches, carrot cake, almond croissants, and more. Though, the most popular pastry is the Sabaya, a thinly layered bread cake drizzled with pure honey. My personal favorite is the Khaliat Al Nahl –also known as Honeycomb Bread– a fluffy pull-apart treat filled with warm cheese and topped with honey. It pairs well with their iconic Adeni chai or the new pistachio latte. After ordering at the counter, you’ll be given a small pager, so you can find an open table and sit until your order is ready.

In terms of seating and space, this location has a surprising two-floor layout. The first floor contains the entrance, ordering counter, and seating. Above, the upstairs has more seating options and is ideal for group study sessions or casual hangouts. My table had enough space for our drinks, a shared pastry, laptops, and books. With the cozy lighting and the strong aroma of fresh coffee, it’s easy to lose track of time while completing a reading or catching up with friends.

For Michiganders like me or anyone in search of a distinctive coffee taste, Qahwah House offers an inviting atmosphere that’s already becoming a go-to spot. Make sure to give it a try, and if you’re a Columbia student, don’t forget to mention it for an occasional student discount.
