Happening in the World: China’s government announced that it will not reject using force over Taiwan. On Monday, China’s military engaged in massive drills around Taiwan. The government also issued a warning to “external interference” by foreign nations, which presumably includes the US who has supplied Taiwan with arms. The democratic Taiwanese government continues to refuse China’s claim of sovereignty over the nation. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: A new California law will see wages for independent health care facility workers increase to $25 an hour over the next decade. The law was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom last year, but was delayed in order to close a $46 billion budget shortfall. Beginning today, about 350 thousand healthcare workers will see an increase in pay. (AP)
Happening in NYC: The Adams administration held a virtual briefing last week addressing new regulations which would allow building owners in the city to pay a fee instead of reducing building emissions. This new regulation is in response to Local Law 97, which requires large buildings to reduce their emissions by 40% in the next five years. Building owners paying in lieu of reducing emissions could have the 40% requirement reduced by up to 10%. (Gothamist)
