Lurie plans on addressing the crisis in relatively unconventional ways, such as offering people detained for drug use the option of treatment or imprisonment. Heir to the Levi Strauss fortune and first-time public office-holder, he has spent more than $8.6 million of his own funds campaigning. (NYT)
