Happening in the World: Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has gifted a zoo in North Korea over 70 animals. The types of animals donated include lions and bears. The President also visited the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un when he went to visit North Korea. The burgeoning alliance between Russia and North Korea has been increasing due to both countries facing sanctions from the West. (BBC)

Happening in the US: On Wednesday November 20, a jury awarded almost $100 million to the family of Botham Shem Jean, a Black man who was killed by police in 2018. Jean was eating ice cream and watching television in Dallas, Texas, when he was shot by a white police officer. The jury concluded that the police officer used excessive force and violated Jean’s constitutional rights. The officer, Amber R. Guyer, was ordered to pay civil penalties of  $60 million in punitive damages and $38.65 million for the family’s loss and suffering. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: After a drought recently being declared by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and residents of the city being told to conserve water, it finally rained in New York City. The lack of rain had been sparking more than 200 brush fires throughout the area. Even though the rain provides temporary relief, the drought is not completely over. (ABC7

Happening in Our Community: On Thursday, November 21, The Center of Global Energy Policy at Columbia’s SIPA’s Women in Energy Initiative will host a discussion with women who have started businesses in the sustainability space. The event aims to give founders information about how to expand their network. The event is open to the public and registration is required. (Columbia University Events
