Happening in the World: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing possible impeachment after his brief martial law declaration earlier this week. The head of his own party, Han Dong-hoon, called Yoon unfit to lead, citing the turmoil caused by the decree, which involved deploying troops to the National Assembly. Han expressed concern that Yoon might repeat such extreme actions if allowed to remain in office, warning that it could lead to a larger crisis for South Korea. The opposition has filed an impeachment bill, accusing Yoon of anti-constitutional actions, and the country’s military has pledged not to follow any future martial law orders. An impeachment vote is scheduled for Saturday—to avoid removal from office, Yoon will need at least eight votes from his own party. (NYT)

Happening in the US:  On Thursday, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Northern California coast, the strongest in California since 2019. The effects were felt from Southern Oregon to the San Joaquin Valley, and the quake even prompted a brief tsunami warning that was later canceled. Surprisingly for an earthquake this size, only minor damage was reported near the epicenter due to it’s “largely horizontal motion,” meaning that two faults had slid past each other rather than collided. Over 14,000 people reported feeling the quake, and short power outages affected about 10,000. The event, combined with a recent lull in seismic activity, has led seismologists to reaffirm that a “Big One,” an earthquake over 8.0 magnitude, could happen soon in California. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: The gunman who shot and killed Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare in Midtown on Wednesday, has still not been found by police despite several tips and even security footage showing the suspect unmasked. Investigators are currently piecing together clues, including the footage, a fake ID, and a cellphone found on a Manhattan sidewalk. The hostel where the suspect stayed has also become a focus of the investigation, though it remains unclear why the suspect chose such a high-profile location. NYPD is now offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information regarding the suspect and his whereabouts. (NYT
