If you’re looking to live close to campus, want a spacious room, and don’t mind living in a double, 600 is the perfect building for you.
Location: 600 W. 116th St. (On the corner of Broadway and 116th, right above Shake Shack.)
- Nearby dorms: The other 600s (616 and 620), Elliott Hall, the Quad, Schaprio, Woodbridge, and 629 W. 115th St. are all within a block.
- Stores and restaurants: 600 is directly above Shack Shack and Pret, and Morton Williams is within the same block. Also on that block are FedEx, the UPS Store, and Ivy League Stationers. It’s also super close to both (all three?) Hooda Halal carts!
Cost: The cost was $13,122 per year and $6,561 per semester for the 2024-2025 academic year
Amenities:
- Bathrooms: Each suite has at least one shared bathroom. (Some of the larger suites have two!)
- AC/Heating: Each bedroom has a window AC unit which can be adjusted by the resident and a heater.
- Kitchen: Each suite has a kitchen area which includes an electric stove and oven, a sink, a refrigerator, and generally a good amount of cabinet and counter space!
- Lounge: There’s one lounge on the second floor, adjacent to the laundry room, with a couch, two arm chairs, and a TV. There’s also a wooden table and chairs in the lounge area.
- Laundry: The laundry room is located on the second floor, adjacent to the lounge, and contains five washing machines and eight dryers.
- Intra-transportation: There are two elevators and a staircase in the building.
- Hardwood/Carpet: Most suites in the building have hardwood floors, although some have linoleum or carpet.
Room variety:
- Suite style. Most suites are six-to-seven people, although some floors have a four-person C suite or a two-person E suite.
- Almost entirely doubles. The A suites all have one single (usually reserved for an RA), and there is one random single in the fourth floor F suite.
Stats from the 2024 Housing Lottery:
- 4/5/6 Lottery: Out of the four four-person suites, one was chosen by a group of rising seniors, two by a group with mixed class years, and one by rising juniors. The only five-person suite was picked into by a group of rising juniors. One six-person suite was taken by rising seniors, 10 by rising juniors, and the other seven by groups with mixed class years.
- 1/2/3 Lottery: The only single was chosen by a rising senior. Out of the 46 available doubles, six were chosen by rising seniors, 14 by rising juniors, 24 by rising sophomores, and two by groups with mixed class years.
Bwog recommendation:
If you don’t mind living in a double, 600 is probably one of your best options. The location is super convenient for access to campus, transportation, and a variety of stores and restaurants. It’s one of the most spacious options for suite-style Barnard housing, with most doubles being around or larger than 18×12 square feet. The suites themselves also contain generally large kitchen and dining room areas, with a ton of cabinet storage (which is especially helpful in the A suite, which usually houses seven people). There are tons of options for non-shafted rooms—especially doubles—and it’s usually not too difficult to find an open and functional washer and dryer during the week! You’ll see the occasional roach or centipede, and your heater may occasionally leak or spray mist into the air, but who doesn’t love a tropical atmosphere?
Resident opinions:
- “Creaky floors.”
- “It gets really hot because of the old radiators but the AC helps.”
- “Very high ceilings.”
