Make a furry friend.
As you walk around Barnard’s campus, you can’t help but notice the abundance of squirrels jumping around the trees and gnawing on leftovers. However, upon crossing the street you encounter a lack of squirrels. One begins to wonder what it is that is attracting these squirrels onto the four acres that make up Barnard’s campus. Perhaps the merch store is more appealing (if you know you know). Or maybe it’s the lush grass of Futter Field.
Squirrels are known to be attracted to trees that produce nuts and seeds, which can be found in Barnard’s Quad and Futter Field. Additionally, the squirrels have access to leftovers from Hewitt, ranging from undercooked brussels sprouts to melted soft serve. Finally, to complete this trifecta of squirrel nip, we have the Quad fountain that provides them with a source of hydration during those hot spring days. This combination of factors will allow squirrels to feast for years to come. However, what everyone wants to know is how to befriend one of these cute creatures. Below I will provide an insightful guide into some steps you can take to gain a squirrel bestie.
- Dress like a squirrel! Nothing can possibly beat the trust squirrels have between each other!
- Put a fresh bowl of water outside your dorm window! You’d be surprised what thirst makes a squirrel do.
- Plant a tree! If you give a squirrel a tree, they will want you to be their forever friend.
- Build them a house! Don’t worry it doesn’t have to be too big, just enough to store all of their food for the winter as well as all of their family members. You can get all of the wood you need from the Design Center in Milstein library.
- Offer them a place in your room! New York City winters can be cold and harsh for fresh squirrels and there’s nothing better than a warm spot with a bed and protection from the unpredictable elements.
