Happening in the World: Irish broadcaster RTÉ has released a statement warning that it will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest “if the participation of Israel goes ahead.” Ireland is among several other nations, including Slovenia and Spain, who have stated that they will withdraw from the competition should Israel be included in light of the mass killings of civilians and journalists in Gaza. Next year’s Eurovision contest is scheduled for May 2026 in Vienna. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed yesterday afternoon at an event at Utah Valley University. As of Thursday morning, authorities are still working to identify the shooter, who fled the scene when the crowd attending Kirk’s event dispersed. Kirk, who was 31 years old, was known as the founder of Turning Point USA, an organization advocating for conservative politics among young people. (AP)
Happening in NYC: Today marks 24 years since the September 11 attacks. The annual commemoration ceremony is being held at Memorial Plaza, and will include the reading aloud of the names of every victim of the attack and six moments of silence. A number of planned road closures have been announced by the NYPD, who have advised City residents and visitors to plan ahead for increased traffic in the Financial District. (Gothamist)
Happening in Our Community: The Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender (ISSG) is hosting a Drag Performance Workshop today ahead of the ISSG Drag Ball on September 19. Students are invited to learn about the history of drag and practice working the runway with Theydy Bedbug and Issa Big Dragon. RVSP is required to attend the event, which will be held from 6 to 8 pm in the Schermerhorn extension.
