Happy first day of Fall!

Highlights: 

On Saturday, the women’s soccer team defeated the Cornell Big Red in a nail-biter season opener. In just the twelfth minute of the game, Cornell’s Gaby Gonzalez scored, putting the Lions at an early deficit. The first half was full of dramatic plays and an offsides call that shielded the Lions from a 2-0 deficit, with goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney (CC ‘28) having two impressive saves. All in all, the Lions defense was solid, giving the Big Red only three shots on goal. 

In the second half, the Lions maintained their defense, gaining a burst of momentum in the 69th minute when junior Maia Beltran (CC ‘27) scored her third goal of the season with an assist from senior Maia Tabion (CC ‘26), tying the score at 1-1. In what could’ve ended in a draw, sophomore Dema Elder  (CC ‘28) came through in the 90th minute, heading in a corner from Tabion securing a win for the Lions. This is the Lions first time beating Cornell on their home turf since 2019, but their fourth consecutive win against the Big Red. 

Next Saturday, the Lions will take on Yale back in New York for their home opener.
