Cinematic masterpieces, cyclists, and more!

Happening off-campus: Carlos Costa fulfilled his childhood dream by opening Cine LT3 in São Paulo, an independent cinema. Inspired by a childhood movie theater visit with his grandmother, Costa used 18,600 of his own savings to convert an old garage into a 35-seat theater and now runs every aspect of the operation by himself. Since its opening in 2022, the theater has become a favorite among film lovers, offering carefully curated art-house programming (by Costa himself) that differs greatly from Brazil’s mall-dominated cinema landscape. Cine LT3 is part of the resistance of independent cinema venues in Brazil that was threatened greatly by the effects of the pandemic, but Costa reaffirms his commitment to facilitating a space where cinema can be an inspirational and transformative experience for theater-goers, despite the financial drawbacks.  (AP)

Happening near campus: A longstanding traffic bottleneck on the Hudson River Greenway near West 54 Street has been resolved with a new underpass that allows cyclists to bypass cruise terminal traffic. Previously, the area had been a chaotic intersection of vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians on what is the most heavily used greenway in the United States, with nearly 7,000 daily cyclists. The solution was the result of a $350 million project to build new TV and film studios on Pier 94. Users of the greenway, particularly cyclists, are exceedingly appreciative of the improvement.  (Gothamist)

Happening on-campus: This Tuesday, October 14, the Columbia University Hispanic Institute will be hosting an evening conversation with Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet, known for Elegy, The Secret Life of Words, and The Bookshop.  The event, sponsored by the Conuslate General of Spain in New York, will include a discussion with Coixet about her creative process, international career, and the thematic elements of her acclaimed work. The conversation is from 6 to 8 pm and will be held at Casa Hispanica (612 W. 116th St., New York, NY 10027) in Room 201. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required via Eventbrite.

Rewatching: I have officially finished my rewatch of Gilmore Girls! Logan is seriously the best in this last season, and I will never understand why Rory turned that beautiful proposal down (the ring alone would have gotten me). The Lorelai and Christopher marriage debacle was just as painful as I remembered it, and this is also the first time I realized that Sookie and Lane have children the same age? Really weird. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed this journey (no I will not be rewatching AYITL, once was more than enough), and if you have any suggestions for my next rewatch, I would greatly appreciate them!
