Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket is off to the red planet.
Happening off-Campus: On Thursday, aerospace company Blue Origin successfully launched its 321-foot New Glenn rocket along with two NASA Mars orbiters. The orbiters will spend a year stationed near Earth before heading toward Mars with a gravity assist from Earth when the planets are realigned. Expected to arrive in 2027, the orbiters will then map Mars’s upper atmosphere and scattered magnetic fields, providing scientists with a better understanding of how to protect astronauts from the red planet’s harsh radiation environment. Happening near Campus: New York City’s Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has announced plans to upgrade the Manhattan Cruise Terminal with modern piers capable of docking three ships at once, effectively quadrupling the number of passengers the terminal can accommodate. Additionally, the remodel will introduce new electrical infrastructure intended to reduce pollution from idling ships. While NYCEDC has not announced a timeline for the remodel, it has said that taxpayers will be responsible for assuming a portion of the costs. (Gothamist).
