I am distracted by paying attention to the lecture.
I love drawing—I am not good at it, but I still love doing it. Sometimes, I come across amazing artwork and feel inspired to draw, but then never find the time to do so; other times, I see something cool on a slide in class, and find it a good excuse to draw in the name of notetaking.
As the semester comes to its final stretch, I thought it would be a good time to share some of the doodles I made in class.
Clothing, Barnard’s Art History Department
Professor Higonnet’s slides are always filled with cool images of clothing.

Can you imagine wearing something like that? I can’t. But I’d really love to try them on.

I can’t draw faces.

Sometimes I see something on the slide and think to myself, “Can I copy that onto my notes before the professor changes to the next slide?” In this case, I was successful.
Medieval Architecture in Europe, Department of Art History and Archaeology
In certain subjects, a drawing to accompany your note just makes a lot of sense. Architecture is one of them.

The once foreign terms have become intimately familiar after being repeated at least a dozen times every lecture.

One of my favorite buildings featured in the course. The real building is much taller, but I think I made it shorter and fatter because it’s cute!

I’m fairly good at imagining three-dimensional shapes in my head, which is really convenient for making drawings like these. I think that ability comes from playing a lot of Minecraft when I was growing up.

The term “squinches” never comes up again, which is a shame, because I really enjoy the way it sounds.

Personally, I’m more of a rounded arch enjoyer.
Literature Humanities, Columbia Core Curriculum
Unfortunately, due to the engaging nature of Literature Humanities classes, I do not have a lot of time to draw in my notebook.

I’m not sure if there’s another ear on the other side, but does it really matter? He’s happy, and that’s what matters.

I finished the mid-term exam early, but I wasn’t allowed to leave. What was allowed is to draw two really handsome cats showing off their fashionable outfits. The cat on the left is wearing a button-down shirt with a neat tie, a fluffy cardigan, and a pair of straight, pleated trousers. He’s listening to something with his earphones, and he knows he looks good. The other cat is a Japanese swordsman, he has studied the blade for at least twenty years, but he put on his cloth wrong, what a silly guy. Can you see what’s wrong with his top?

I just love drawing cats!
Bonus Doodles
Looking back on my notebook from Spring 2024, my last semester at a community college before transferring to Columbia, I found evidence of more time to doodle in the relatively slow-paced lectures. Here are some of them, as bonus content!

That’s it! These are some of the silly doodles I made in class this year. With more and more of my peers choosing to take their notes on a laptop or a tablet, it seems that the art of doodling in class has become a thing of the past. I hope to inspire people to take up their pen and notebook again, and revel in the joy of filling up the margin with silly creatures, or class-relevant graphics.
