Nobody has fallen on the Low Steps like I have fallen on the Low Steps.

The Low Steps are arguably one of Columbia’s most distinctive features, and for some, their favorite spot on campus. As a freshman it felt like a rite of passage to sit on the steps, but little did I know they were going to be my downfall in disguise. Literally.

Without fail, every single time I walk up and down these steps, I seem to trip or, even worse, fall embarrassingly. The problem lies in the shape of the step being so wide and having little steepness which, makes it a nightmare when I am in a rush and lose my footing.

At this point, I am over the embarrassment of falling because it’s happened one too many times, and after checking with my friends, they report this has happened to them too. So I am going to go ahead and say that it’s not a me problem, but really it’s the steps.

After numerous tumbles it would be natural to assume I have learned to avoid the steps, but sometimes it’s quite literally the only way to get across campus, so the only thing I can do is proceed with caution.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the steps. But only from afar, as more of a landmark and a photo op.

If you have not tripped on these steps, I applaud you!
