Happening off-Campus: Jessie Diggins captured bronze in the women’s 10-kilometer interval start at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics while battling a rib injury suffered earlier in the Games. She finished 49.7 seconds behind Sweden’s Frida Karlsson, who won gold, with Ebba Andersson taking silver to complete a Swedish sweep of the top two spots. Diggins collapsed after the race and described it as an especially grueling week, but said she was proud and grateful to earn another Olympic medal in her final season. (AP)

Happening near Campus: Lab tests of dirty snow piles from Williamsburg, Washington Heights and Jackson Heights found high levels of lead, bacteria and road salt, confirming that the snow had trapped weeks of urban grime. The highest lead levels, 279 parts per billion, were found beneath elevated subway tracks in Jackson Heights, far above federal drinking water standards, though experts said the risk is similar to what’s already present in city soil if the snow is left alone. Samples also contained fecal bacteria and elevated strontium, likely from soil or other common urban sources. Scientists said the bigger concern may come when the snow melts, potentially sending contaminants into waterways, though winter conditions reduce public exposure. (Gothamist)
