Yes, they are $40 a class, but I still keep going back.

It feels like everyone in this city is obsessed with workout classes, but just one of these will run you up $40 on average at a well-known studio. Many of these places have cult followings, with each bringing a different vibe. After trying most of the popular spots, I am here to tell you which ones are actually worth it.

SoulCycle: An awesome spin class overall, they also have a little arms segment towards the end of class with lighter weights (3 or 5 lbs). The class is a vibe, it is dark, and the music is loud, but you feel connected to your ride and the effort on the bike. For first-timers, the choreography may be a little intense, but there is no pressure to do it flawlessly. For SoulCycle, people have favorite instructors whose classes they choose to attend, and this is quite important because the instructor sets the tone of the class. Try out a few and see whose routines and rides you like best. I think it is a great high-intensity cardio workout; it is fun and always leaves you feeling amazing. One con is that the studio is pretty tightly packed, so I find myself hoping I do not hit the person behind me in the arms section.

SolidCore: The absolute hardest thing I have ever done, but it’s such an accomplishment to be done with a class. Yes, you will be sore the next day, but it’s the type of thing that makes you want to go back. Their machine is a custom-made MegaFormer, so while it may be similar to other places in the city, there are a few differences, such as its springs and carriage. If you are looking for a low-impact yet extremely difficult workout (you will be shaking) with an amazing atmosphere, this is definitely it. The instructors at SolidCore are super attentive and will correct forms, which is always reassuring! One thing I will say is that the first time you go, it is a little hard to keep up with learning the moves while listening to the instructor over music, which is quite loud, so that is something to keep in mind. However, they do offer intro classes, which is definitely a smart move to learn how the machine works.

SLT: This workout also takes place on a MegaFormer machine that is similar to SolidCore but feels a little more plush. The workout, whilst arguably less intense than SolidCore, is a better option if you are just starting out. The studio is bright, and you can hear the instructor clearly with less emphasis on the vibe and more on the slow, controlled nature of the movements. The workout felt wholesome, and the instructors were attentive to form and offered corrections when needed.

CorePower: I took their iconic Yoga Sculpt class. It’s a heated yoga class that incorporates light, handheld dumbbells for a sculpting effect. While you have your usual yoga flow with classic moves like downward dog and tree pose, they mix it up with a cardio segment. At first, I was confused by the sudden addition of jumping jacks in this class, but it did a good job at increasing the heart rate and adding some cardio. The overall workout is not too high-impact, and you leave with a good sweat and a sense of revitalization.

Barry’s: A 50-minute high-intensity class that is truly a workout for runners. 50% of the class is on a treadmill, with the instructor cueing a speed range, and the other 50% is on the floor doing bodyweight or weighted exercises with your choice of weight. The lights are red, and the room is considerably dark with high-energy music blasting. It feels like a party, but you are actually exercising! It is intense, but there are no surprises: you run and do some floor exercises. It is straightforward and effective, and they have an amazing smoothie bar, which is the perfect after-class reward.

Ultimately, each one of these classes provides something different, and they are all amazing in their own way. If you are looking for a more relaxed, low-impact workout, SLT or CorePower is the way to go. But if the dark vibe makes you feel extra motivated and you want to feel sweaty and burn, SolidCore, Barry’s, and SoulCycle are better options. In terms of a more hands-off workout where you are in control, Barry’s and SoulCycle provide that, where you push yourself and give whatever effort you can. With SolidCore and SLT, it is a set number of springs based on your experience level, with hands-on correction from the instructor in a more intimate setting. Really, the experience you want should guide the type of workout you are looking for. Even though they are pricey, all the classes mentioned above are great!
