If you’re looking for a place close to campus and are ready to live in a double, look no further than 600, the baby of the 600s!
Location: 600 West 116th Street
Nearby Dorms: 616, 620, the Quad, Hewitt, Schapiro, Woodbridge
Stores And Restaurants: Morton William’s, Shake Shack, Pret, Sweetgreen
Cost: $5,413 per semester
Amenities:
- Bathrooms: There is one private bathroom for each suite.
- AC/Heating: Does not have AC, unfortunately, but does have heating.
- Kitchen: There is one kitchen per suite which includes a refrigerator, an oven with a gas stovetop. Most suites have a galley style kitchen as opposed to other dorms like Plimpton.
- Lounges: TV Lounge on the 2nd Floor, for TV Lounge with Computers and Piano, you need to go to 616 (not too far!)
- Laundry: The laundry room is located on the second floor and usually isn’t too packed.
- Gym: No gym in the building, but Barnard Hall is close to the building! Dodge is only slightly farther.
- Intra-transportation: Two relatively slow elevators, where one is almost always out of commission.
- Hardwood/Carpet: Some suites are hardwood, and some are linoleum
- Wifi: You can use Barnard Secure or Barnard Guest
Room Variety:
- Since 600 also has non-Barnard affiliated apartments as well, the layout of available rooms differs as to which are permanently occupied.
- There are 2-person, 4-person, and 6-person suites available for housing selection. The 2-person E line suites typically go to seniors, as do the 4-person suites.
- For the A, B, and C lines, all rooms have a view of either Broadway or 116th St. One double in the D line is shafted, all of the F line suites are shafted, and the E line is also shafted.
Numbers:
- 600 houses 204 upperclassmen. Generally, 600 goes to mostly Juniors and a few Sophomore groups. Sophomore groups, however, are almost all shafted.
Bwog Recommendations:
- 600 is great if proximity to campus is something you are concerned about! It’s centrally located near a lot of dorms in addition to Barnard and Columbia’s campuses. It also has nearby food, such as Morton Williams, Shake Shack, etc.
- Due to its central location, it’s also nearby to dining halls, which means it’s easier to use your meal plan if you have one with a lot of swipes.
- It’s almost all doubles, however, the doubles are fairly spacious, but it would require you to be willing to have a roommate again.
- One of 600’s biggest drawbacks is the lack of A/C, so if that is something that is important to you, 600 might not be your best bet.
Resident Opinions:
- “The F line is weirdly set up, but I love the big kitchen and how roomy the doubles are!”
- “There’s never a wait for laundry.”
- “There were a lot of good dogs on my floor, I will miss my dog neighbors :(“
- “The elevator really takes it’s time to come and get you”
- “The lack of A/C honestly is not too much of a problem, it’s just the first week or two you need to take multiple showers a day, but past that it’s totally fine!”
