Happening in the World: Phosphine has been detected in Venus’ atmosphere. The detection raises questions as to whether there may be life on Venus. The compound’s only source on rocky planets is life—therefore leading some scientists to come to the conclusion that Venus may be a host to life that we have yet to see. That being said, there is currently debate within the astronomy community on whether there is life or there is another source of phosphine we have yet to discover. Regardless, further research and exploration will need to be done before definite conclusions can be made. (Nature)

Happening in the US: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg passed away on Friday at the age of 87. Justice Ginsberg leaves behind a profound legacy that has impacted generations. Her death leaves uncertainty as to who her seat on the Supreme Court will be filled by and when that will happen. (NYTimes)

Happening in NYC: Indoor pools in NYC have been cleared to open starting on September 30th. In an announcement from the mayor’s office—pools are allowed to open at a 33% capacity. However, the city’s 12 indoor pools run by the NYC Recreation Centers will not be opening, as the locations have been acting as testing and food distribution sites. The opening comes months after Gov. Cuomo allowed indoor pools in New York state to open and weeks after gyms in NYC were allowed to reopen. (Gothamist)

Happening in Our Community: Columbia Health, in collaboration with researchers from the Mailman School of Public Health and the School of General Studies, is holding a Virtual Naloxone Training. Naloxone is a medication used to quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The event will be held on Monday, September 21 from 1 pm to 2 pm EDT. Naloxone kits will be mailed to participants at the completion of the training and you can register for the training here. (Columbia Events)
