POV: Your head is empty and every light you see is the Moon.

The moth simultaneously has the best vibes and emptiest head of any other creature on this Earth. In my estimation, they have had approximately one (1) square thought in their little moth lives, and that is “MOON.” But for the moth, the concept of what is or is not the moon is a bit hazy. Basically, in the moth’s opinion, the only qualifiers for being the moon are “bright” and “up.” You know what, I respect the hell out of it. I think we can all strive to have one or two fewer brain cells and be just a little happier this holiday season. Look at a streetlight and convince yourself it’s the moon goddammit!

If this sounds appealing to you, the holidays in New York are the perfect time to shut off all critical thinking and follow the lights around the city. And if you’re thinking to yourself now: “I would love to be a moth, but I don’t know where to start!” fret not, I have created this handy guide just for you.

Step one: Assemble your moth buddies

It is very important when shutting off your brain to do so as a group.

Step two: Head downtown

If you are still in Morningside Heights, you’re doing it wrong. In order to get out of your head, you need to get out of the place where your head does the thinky thing. Rockefeller works but may I put a word in for Little Italy, which is also lit up quite nicely at this time of year.

Step three: Follow the lights

Whichever street looks prettiest, whichever shop window catches your eye, don’t think about it just follow it. Moths don’t think, and neither should you.

Step four: Don’t have a destination

Don’t have a place to be, don’t have a reservation, just enjoy seeing where the lights take you.

Step five: Get some gelato

On this journey, you will inevitably bump into a gelato shop, at which point you should absolutely get yourself a little sweet treat.
