If CUNY becomes free, maybe Columbia can lower tuition at least a little bit?

Happening in the World: Two cargo ships collided early Monday morning in the Baltic Sea causing one to overturn. According to officials, the UK ship, Scot Carrier, hit the Danish ship, Karin Hoej, forcing the Danish ship to capsize. Currently, the police and coast guard are investigating the UK skip crew for gross negligence at sea and possible drunkenness. The two members of the Danish crew have not been found and are feared dead (BBC).

Happening in the US: In Kentucky, workers are still searching through rubble and debris for survivors from Friday’s disastrous streak of tornadoes. Luckily, as crews dug searched the ruins yesterday they are hopeful the death toll will not be as high as originally expected. In a statement, Mayfield Consumer Products, which runs the candle factory many believe will be responsible for the highest number of dead, said only eight employees are confirmed dead and that only six remain missing. Search and rescue crews are expected to continue working for the duration of the week (NYT).

Happening in NYC: Advocates, joined with teachers and lawmakers, began a new push to make CUNY (City University of New York) schools tuition free. While the push for free tuition has been ongoing for many years, a new proposal in the state legislature, New Deal for CUNY bill, aims to provide the $1.47 billion dollars to make CUNY tuition free. Currently, tuition is around $6,930 (Gothamist).
