Last Thursday, staff writers Ava, Hattie, and Maren took a trip to Hewitt dining hall to try out all the new additions that occurred over winter break to drastically improve Barnard’s dining experience!
Following a much-needed winter break, we found ourselves back in our home away from home: Hewitt. Upon entry, however, we met a line snaking all through the tunnels to the stairs of Barnard Hall. WHAT IS HAPPENING? Absolute pandemonium! Let us tell you all about it.
Making our way inside, we were riveted by the contemporary interior design innovations. A beautiful new wallpaper greeted us, as well as new plates and cutlery that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye with their simple white tones. For all caffeine-addicted Bwog readers, you can also now drink more of your preferred hot bev in upgraded mugs that hold notably more liquid than the small white mugs that constantly spill.
Hewitt now has not 1, not 2, but 6 served stations. Barnard Kosher, 500 Degrees, Homestyle, Flame, Pure Eats, and drumroll please… Innovation Kitchen! Innovation Kitchen provides students with a hot meal alternative for all three meals. A particular meal of note is breakfast—while last semester homestyle would choose between serving pancakes, waffles, or French toast, Innovation Kitchen has all three. And, the French toast is no longer in soggy stick form but served in triangular slices with the perfect combo of crunch and fluff. And, the scrambled eggs have transitioned from their possible powder origins to Martha Stewart (a Barnard alum) worthy concoctions.
And the changes didn’t stop there! Students were shocked to find a new sweet treat spot right in the servery? What is it? You may be wondering, but a soft serve machine has taken residence, rivaling JJ’s milkshakes and John Jay’s specialty Dole Whip. Accompanied by toppings of cherries, chocolate and caramel syrup, Oreos, candy cane flakes, and sprinkles, the #barnardbaddies can now finish off (or start) their meals with this specialty! And the best part is that the machine is open at breakfast because it is never too early for ice cream.
With the ice cream, you can now make a soda float, especially with Hewitt’s new featured bev, Dr. Pepper. Because you know what they say… a Dr. Pepper a day keeps the doctor away.
We enjoyed chocolate and vanilla sundaes with creative combinations of toppings, a perfect ending to a treacherous week of shopping classes. However, we can’t recommend coming if you are short on time because the line was just as long as the Amity Senior Night one, and finding a seat was almost as hard as securing a table at Butler during finals.
