The beloved dive bar Lucy’s has reopened and is ready for business.
Happening in the World: As Trump imposes a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods entering the US, tension between countries is created. In response to the tariffs, Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, called out Trump, saying that it was a “very dumb thing to do.” Trump’s imposed 25% tariffs will be expensive, causing an increase in the cost of fruits and vegetables from Mexico and the rising price of oil from Canada in the US. Additionally, these tariffs might potentially start a US-Canada-Mexico trade war. (BBC)
Happening in the US: The US government is continuing to cut federal spending, causing many veterans who work for the federal government to lose their jobs. Around 20,000 workers, with 6,000 of them being veterans, have lost their jobs due to Elon Musk and Donald Trump. With many veterans losing their jobs, Republicans are facing backlash from Trump’s workforce downsizing. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: After being closed for more than a year due to financial issues, the dive bar Lucy’s has reopened in East Village! Jon Neidich, a man who used to live above Lucy’s, decided to take over the dive bar and help reopen it. While Neidich did change Lucy’s from being cash-only to accepting credit cards, this dive bar is still offering 2006 pricing with $2 domestic beers, $3 domestic spirits, and $10 martinis. (Gothamist)
